Birthdays

A Royal Party

July 29, 2012

When I suggested a "Royal" theme to Isabella when planning her fourth birthday party, she was super excited - mostly about having a castle cake.  Of course I should have taken a better photo before all the guests arrived and I was too busy to take the time, but anyway, here it is.  I spent most of the day on Friday in the kitchen.  The girls and I were up to our eyeballs in cake mixture.  Five x cake recipe = 5 cups of flour, 5 cups of sugar, 10 eggs, 200g butter, 200g cocoa, 1 tablespoon vanilla essence, zest and juice of three oranges and 2 cups of milk to be precise.  The icing was made from cream cheese, icing sugar, cocoa and orange juice.  Issie and Juliette thought it was the best day ever.  Licking beater after beater clean of choc/orange cake mixture. Yum!

Issie and I worked on moulding the mushrooms, doors, windows, flags and princess from royal icing a few days before which was lots of fun.  I finished the cake Friday afternoon and then had the evening while the kids slept to ice it. Unfortunately by morning, the ice cream cone turrets were looking a bit limp from soaking up all the icing, but they managed to stand up to the heat blasting from our heater on the day and all the kids were still impressed!
Isabella loved wearing her princess dress which I made from a recycled skirt, topped with some apricot tuille. (Note the tissue mopping up a runny nose!)

Overall, I think the Royal party was a success, although I think my birthday princess was a little overwhelmed with a house full of people - 16 kids (plus adults) all inside due to bad weather!

And I have to show off my sister Jules' crafty work.  While I was busy making cake, she was busy making this beautiful gift for Issie.
Knock, knock...
How cute is this??? Two little felt girls in their bed with a chest of drawers full of clothes!

Thanks Jules - such a gorgeous gift!
Isabella still in her dress five hours later, enjoying playing with one of her gifts after a big, big day!
Happy Birthday to my first beautiful girl! x

The Emily Button Project - complete!

July 26, 2012

Isabella turned four on Tuesday, and I eagerly watched her open her special present that I poured hours into! The Emily Button project is complete with Emily, Bobble the cat and Mousey the mouse.  I was happy that she tucked them up in their little box and took them off to bed with her.  She let them use her nightlight and carefully placed them up by her pillow to sleep with her.  So cute!

Mousey the mouse is about 7cm tall and I reckon (don't you love that word?!) I matched his body fabric pretty well!

I had heaps of fun trying to get the colours for the characters just right and Emily's pocket is big enough to store many a miniature treasure!  I'm especially happy with her dress/top.  I think she looks best just in her dress, but Issie wants her to wear the top and pants too - like in the book.  If you would like to see how the Emily Button Project progressed, have a look here.

So now my focus is turning toward Isabella's "Royal" party which we are hosting on Saturday.  There will be about 10 -14 children coming in their royal attire.  I am super excited about making the royal castle cake.  It will be my most ambitious cake attempt and I hope it looks okay!  Will post some photos for my next post.

As usual on a Thursday, I am linking up here.

Short sleeved cardi

July 19, 2012

Here is the little short sleeved cardi I started for Emily a few weeks ago.
It looks pretty sweet, I think.  Pattern (free) and yarn details are here.

My first crochet project

July 12, 2012

Here is my beautiful little Emily, sporting my proud first crocheted project!  I have had a bit of a go at crochet before... I got excited and made some granny squares last year after borrowing a 'teach yourself crochet' book from the library.  The squares are sitting in our linen cupboard waiting for something.  I also had a go at a scalloped edge on this hat.  But this is the first 'garment' I have crocheted.
I used this pattern from Ravelry as a base, although I changed the increase pattern towards the end as it was becoming to big.  I also added the earflaps to keep little ears warm!
Don't look too closely - it's not perfect but I am pretty happy with how it turned out.
Some of the out takes!

The Emily Button Project - Chapter Three

July 04, 2012

This is Bobble.  Emily Button's number one sidekick.  He has been slowly coming together between knitting a cardigan for Emily (and pulling out and re-knitting. Grrr....), making gifts, piecing a quilt for Juliette and having fun on Pinterest (I'm new and I love it!).
I had fun trying to matcht the colours and fabrics and am pleased with how this little guy turned out.  Now I just have to make Mousey the Mouse and Emily's outfits.  You can check out Chapter One and Chapter Two if you would like to see my inspiration for this little cat.
